This virtual museum presents a glimpse into the life of enslaved Africans in
South Carolina as early as 1670. The first permanent colony was created near
present day Charleston, South Carolina.
The slaves helped established the colony in many ways, such as
building homes, cooking, sewing, gardening, cattle raising, skilled labor and
artisanship. The introduction to
rice, indigo, and cotton required more labor; therefore, more slaves were
captured and imported to South Carolina and other colonies.
